12 Hours of Rim Nordic

Our 4 person team entered our second 12 hour race of the 12 hours of Socal series on Saturday. The race was held in Rim Nordic, and the course was tough. At 9 miles in length and with 1300 ft of Elevation per lap, it didn't seem like it should be much tougher than the one in Temecula, but I guess when you put us at close to 8000 ft elevation to begin with, the air is harder a lot harder to breath. The course started with a challenging singletrack climb up to a fire road, where the climbing continued until you dropped into a steep switchback descent followed by a fast fire road descent and another short set of single track switchbacks. Then at the end there was another fire road rolling climb. This climb would normally seem pretty mellow I think, but after what I'd been through the last 45 minutes or so, it seemed pretty rough to me. Though a tough one, the course was actually also really fun, and if I hadn't been killing myself, I think it would have made a great ride. This is probably why I was still able to smile on my way out for my last lap.

Our team did great!! We were down a member due to illness, but called in Colin as our sub and he did awesome, especially considering he hadn't been on his bike more than a couple of times in the last few months.

Jeff started us off and got us into a solid 4th place position, which we managed to hold all day and finish up as the 4th place 4 person team out of 18 teams. We are all really happy about this since in Temecula we came in 13th. Kudos to Jeff who put in 4 laps and our best times of the day. Looks like all his xc racing is definitely paying off.

I don't have too much else to say about this race. I had a great time, despite feeling like I might puke several times during the day. Our other Don's Team (3 person) did really well as well, and Al, the Don's solo rockstar put in an awesome 12 laps and got 2nd in Pro Men.

I think someday I would like to try to do a solo 12 hour...really! Maybe when I'm old and scared and can't race downhill anymore.
