Well, what I can say about the Dirt Series is that it seems like it is an awesome camp. For us in Park City in 2009 however, I think it was just an okay version of an awesome camp. I think the idea is dead on, and the organization is great, and the instructors are super cool and really know their stuff. But if you get thunder and lightning all weekend the week of your camp, it's likely not going to be that amazing. You can't predict the weather right? I still had a great time and the instructors did a great job at improvising schedule changes, and it was awesome to see so many women out riding... I was just a little bummed that we only got to do 1 ride and I didn't get to try out the more advanced skills sessions.
The idea of the Dirt Series I think, is to get women on bikes and get them comfortable enough with basic skills to ride at the level they want to. I applaud them for this and it seems like they do a great job. 50 Women at this camp!! and there was a wait list! CRAZY! they certainly must be doing something right.
Despite the lightning, I think everyone there still came away having learned something new or having been given some advice that they could take home and work on. I for example discovered that I have no concept of where my back tire is, and was given some great advice about using more lateral movement that I've already seen improve my riding when I think about it more. Other women learned how to do manuals, which apparently is tops on the to-learn list for many women, and others conquered their first switchbacks and teeter totters along with a variety of other skills.
We also got free beer and free food and some other sweet freebies, so all was certainly not lost. However, for the same reason that we didn't get to ride much, I also don't have any pictures to share, so this is kind of a boring looking blog post.
I have nothing but good things to say about the Dirt Series camps... lightning however... I can do without.
